Peabody opened The Sundial Centre in July 2001, in partnership with London Catalyst and the London borough of Tower Hamlets Council. The Sundial Centre is a beautiful, vibrant and welcoming community centre dedicated to meeting the needs of the local community, with an emphasis on services for people aged 50 and over. All of our members are encouraged to use our full range of services and to get involved in decision making.
In recent years we have opened the Sundial to a wider age range to maximise the use of the centre to become a community resource.
The LinkAge Plus team at the Sundial Centre co-ordinate the LinkAge Plus Project and provide support to the rest of the LinkAge Plus centres. We also provide an outreach service that holds drop in sessions for anyone who needs help or assistance.
The centre has a full timetable of activities, groups and services ranging from keep fit, IT, singing and bowls, through to arts and crafts and bingo. We also run events and work in close partners in Tower Hamlets and Hackney Council to deliver, health and information services and projects. Recent additions to our programmes include: over 50s Zumba, healthy-eating days, mums and babies yoga and digital photography sessions.
We encourage volunteers, young and old at Sundial and they are central to our success. Providing: admin, reception, kitchen and support in our day care centre. We also have volunteers that lead our IT, creative writing and Bingo sessions.
We aim to be user-led in all we do and we have an active user group called S.Age (Senior Age), established in 2006, is an independent group of Sundial users aged 50 and over running their own enterprise that raises funds for activities for local older people. Our more recently established Men’s Shed group, is developing into a vibrant user group engaged in several projects and outings.
Daycare – We have a high quality, stimulating day service for older adults aged 65 and over and we strive to encourage shared access across Sundial’s services. We operate on weekdays from 10 to 3pm and provide transport, personal care range of activities and hot freshly cooked meals. We also provide access to a range of well-being services such as benefits advice to chiropody, eye tests and hairdressing. To join our day care centre you will need to be reffered by Tower Hamlets adults health & well being team. Please contact their center on 020 3828 3928.
